The biggest event on the Ballymena Raceway calendar takes place over the weekend of August 22/23 when the County Antrim track hosts the 2008 World Championship for the Stock Rod class. Heading the star-studded entry list is defending World Champion Glenn Bell from Portadown. Also in the line-up will be World number two and current British Champion Stuart Fox from Crewe and Scottish champion Robert McDonald from Armadale. Other local drivers expected to challenge for victory include Irish champion Victor McAfee, former World Champion Alastair Calvin and current points leader Shane Murray.

British Long Track champion Davy Philp Jnr. from Scotland is another heavily fancied to go well, together with former National champions Mark Barber and Ed Trofer. Other mainland drivers booked in to compete are Scotland’s Tony Lattka and English driver Dave Patterson. An eight strong group of drivers from Tipperary Raceway in the Republic of Ireland are journeying north to compete in the championships.

The drivers will contest a gruelling session of qualifying heats on Friday evening (August 22) to earn their position on the grid for the final which takes place on Saturday (August 23). The top thirty-six drivers will go directly into the World Final line-up while the remaining drivers will have to battle it out in a last chance race to claim the final two slots on the grid.

A full programme of support races are planned for each evening. The Formula Two Stock Cars and Group Two Lightning Rods complete the action on Friday evening, with the Group Twos also racing on Saturday evening along with the Junior Rods and the ever popular National Hot Rods. For the Hot Rod men Saturday’s meeting is another World qualifying Round and all the province’s top stars such as Dungannon’s Irish Open champion Keith Martin, British champion Stewart Doak, Portadown ace Gary Woolsey and Crumlin’s John Christie will be in  action searching for those valuable points.

It promises to be an excellent two days of short oval motorsport with racing commencing on both evenings at 7:30pm.
